These three charities below are all organisations I have become closely involved with over the years and mean a great deal to me. I became an ambassador for Wings For Life in 2011 after I broke my back in a horse riding accident. Although damaging my spinal cord I narrowly escaped paralysis and so through Wings For Life I became focused on helping those who have been less fortunate than myself. I am a patron of Philip Green Memorial School, which is 15mins away from St.Giles and so I get to experience first hand the fantastic work that goes on there on a regular basis. Finally, the Victoria Education Centre, was originally part of the Shaftesbury Society, before it changed its name to Livability, and has therefore been closely linked to the family since it was founded. I am a patron for the Sparkle Appeal there which aims to add to the already exceptional and completely essential facilities available for the children. Please consider these charities when you take part in the Grand Shaftesbury Run - it goes without saying, every little helps!

Wings for Life

Wings For Life is a spinal cord research foundation dedicated to finding effective treatments for spinal cord injuries. Every year 130,000 people survive a spinal cord injury and Wings for Life is working to improve their lives, and those of nearly 3 million people living with the injury worldwide. The money we raise funds cutting-edge research projects and clinical trials worldwide, with increasing success every year.  We are grateful to our founders for generously covering our overheads so that every penny raised goes into the research.

We look forward to welcoming you to our team! You can build your personal fundraising page on www.bmycharity.com/wingsforlifeuk and please contact Elizabeth.Credgington@wingsforlife.com to sign up for a starter pack. The Philip Green Memorial School, Horticultural Project

The School was established in 1971 as Boveridge House School. The Headmistress, Miss Peggy Harper, believed, rather unfashionably at the time, that young people with learning difficulties could and should be educated. The school flourished under Miss Harper's direction for many years, providing education for a variety of young people.

In 1997 Mrs Harper retired and the Boveridge House School Trust was formed by a group of then parents to run the school. The name was changed to reflect this new era.

As the Philip Green Memorial school we have grown and now cater for 42 students with a diversity of needs. We encourage every student to work to their potential in all areas of the curriculum and ensure that they recognise and take pride in their own achievements while appreciating and supporting the success of others.  We are presently developing vocational courses for the students to develop skills which we hope will allow them to find employment.  To this end we are hoping to establish a horticulture department to include both teaching and practical facilities.

Victoria Education Centre and Sports College, Sparkle Appeal

The Sparkle Appeal aims to raise £4 million to build a new therapy centre made up of a hydrotherapy pool, music therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy rooms and a Life Skills flat for the children and young people at Victoria Education Centre and Sports College (VEC).

VEC specialises in providing education, care and therapy for pupils with physical difficulties, predominantly cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy and also has expertise in helping children who have acquired head injuries.

It was recognised as a specialist sports college in September 2007 and in 2009 OFSTED called our sports “outstanding”. As London prepares to host the Paralympics in 2012 our dream is to see students competing as part of Team GB.
